I’ve not the brush to stroke
the walls, nor the dream to
add to this summer’s scene.
Others have left their sketch
of sand, sea and Rocky Neck,
but I will not embark on
Ocean’s dark with a tide gone out.

We were close,
but never made it.
We touched,
but never made it.
We were friends and we
almost made it.
You were going to teach
the blind, and I was going
to be a poet.

Arcadia still lives,
hold fast all hearts.
Love is never lost,
that is ever love.
Endless is hope;
Endless is faith;
Endless is love.

Sidewalk trees reaching out
in a September breeze,
trying to touch each other
by the joining of leaves.
Like an arbor,
creating a safe harbor,
for those that need
to get out of the rain.

Love is the beginning
of a spiritual bond
between two people,
who are locked body
and soul into each other’s arms,
who have agreed to live a
journey through life together.
So where one goes,
the other will follow.

I am in the Alcatraz of my room
where loneliness is endless.
And dreams bounce off all the walls
and back,
never passing through the window
into the streets of letdown dreams.

I would come out to meet you,
but there’re too many intersections
and I always cross against the light.
Please come to my room and we will
watch the world through window glass.

And if we become afraid,
we will pull down the shade
and I will build you sandcastles on
distant shores, and I will
fly the kite of dreams to Disneyland
and back, and if it rains,
I will paint the sun on your face.
For all this would you love me?

Bag lady, doorway man,
why are you on cardboard
instead of sand.

Bag lady, doorway man,
the world has turned its eyes from you,
humanity does not hear
the cries from you.

That you are a real person
lost, lonely and uncertain
of your direction and goals.

That all you want
is a helping hand,
off the cardboard
in the sand.
